James Cameron: The Force Awakens Lacks “Visual Imagination”

James Cameron, the director of box office giants Titanic and Avatar, has hinted that he was disappointed with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In a video interview recently posted to YouTube, Cameron opined that the venture lacked the “innovative visual imagination” of past Star Wars films.

Cameron – who is, as The Guardian notes, close to Star Wars creator George Lucas, remarked: “I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before”.

However, he still appeared to see promise in the movie; emphasizing that he has “a lot of respect for JJ Abrams”, its director, he said that The Force Awakens “took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So for me the jury’s out, I wanna see where they go with it.”

While Cameron’s comments are bound to attract publicity, they could also be easily misconstrued. The Terminator director admitted that he didn’t want to express too much opinion about The Force Awakens – which, in any case, could set the stage for more exciting adventures down the line.
