Residents of Los Angeles can now add a vaccination certificate to their Apple Wallet.
As first reported by Bloomberg, the county has been working with Healthvana to allow users to add a record of their COVID-19 vaccination to their Apple Wallet app, which could make it easier to gain entry into bars, restaurants, workplaces, and flights in the months ahead.
The record proves to others that they have received their first jab, and offers a reminder of the second shot that’s needed in the current two-dose vaccination process.
Right now, it’s necessary to have your first jab and then wait one month before receiving the second dose.
This new Wallet record will ensure that users do not miss their second appointment and will help speed up the vaccination process in Los Angeles County. It’s unknown whether other states are planning to roll out similar tech, but success in LA could increase the chances.
Speaking to Bloomberg about the program, Claire Jarashow, LA’s director of vaccine-preventable disease, said: “We’re really concerned. We really want people to come back for that second dose. We just don’t have the capacity to be doing hundreds of medical record requests to find people’s first doses and when they need to get their second.”
One of the reasons why LA is moving to Apple Wallet and other digital wallets is because those who are vaccinated receive a small paper card, which can be easily lost.
Moving over to digital technologies means that there’s more permanent proof of the vaccination and makes it easier for users to remember to attend their follow-up vaccination appointment.
