Live Translation on iPhone brings the idea of a universal translator into daily life. Whether you’re answering a call from a colleague in another country, chatting with family who speak a different language, or ordering food while traveling, the feature turns speech and text into something both sides can understand, right when it’s happening. It runs directly inside iOS using Apple’s on-device intelligence, which keeps conversations private while staying fast and reliable even when connections are weak.

This isn’t just about converting words. Live Translation keeps the rhythm of a conversation going. You speak, the other person hears it in their language. They reply, and you hear it in yours. The same works in Messages and FaceTime captions, letting conversations flow instead of stopping to copy and paste text into a translator.

How to Turn On Live Translation

Settings > General > Language & Region > Live Translation

Once enabled, iOS can translate supported languages in phone calls, FaceTime, and supported apps like Messages and Translate. You can also choose the languages you want available for offline use, which is helpful when traveling.

Using Live Translation in Phone Calls

Phone > Ongoing Call > Live Translation

During a call, tap the Live Translation button to turn it on. Speak naturally. The other person hears your voice translated into their language, and their reply is translated back to you in real time. Subtitles can also appear on your screen so you can read along.

Using Live Translation in Messages

Messages > Any Conversation > Live Translation

Type in your language and the message is automatically translated before sending. Incoming replies arrive translated into your preferred language. You can still tap to see the original text if needed.

Using Live Translation with FaceTime

FaceTime > Live Captions > Live Translation

When Live Captions are enabled, FaceTime can show translated subtitles as people speak. This is especially useful for group calls where several languages are being spoken at once.

Using the Translate App for Live Conversations

Translate > Conversation

The Conversation mode lets two people hold a face-to-face dialogue, each speaking their own language while the iPhone translates both sides out loud and on screen. You can hold the phone between you or hand it back and forth.

When Live Translation Is Most Useful

Travel

Ordering food, asking for directions, or checking into a hotel becomes much easier when both sides can speak freely without worrying about grammar or vocabulary.

Family and Friends

Multilingual households can mix languages naturally, letting grandparents, parents, and kids communicate without awkward pauses.

Work and Study

International calls, interviews, and study groups stay focused on the topic instead of struggling with language barriers.

Privacy and On-Device Processing

Live Translation uses Apple’s on-device models whenever possible. That means your voice and messages aren’t sent to external servers for processing. Conversations stay on your iPhone, which aligns with Apple’s broader privacy design across iOS.

Offline Language Support

Settings > General > Language & Region > Download Languages

Downloading language packs lets Live Translation work even when you don’t have internet access. This is especially useful on planes, trains, or when roaming in another country.

Live Translation turns the iPhone into a bridge between cultures. It removes the friction of language without turning conversations into robotic exchanges, keeping voices, tone, and timing intact while making sure both sides understand each other.
