Mac shipments up 5% in the second quarter of 2020 Overall computer market grew by 2.8%, fueled by the coronavirus pandemic

Shipments of Mac devices, including iMacs, Mac Pros, and MacBooks, grew 5.1% in the second quarter of 2020,  according to shipping estimates provided by Gartner.

In the second quarter of 2020, at a time when most of the world was working from home or furloughed from their jobs, Apple shipped around 4.4 million Macs, up from 4.2 million in the same period in 2019.

During the quarter, Apple’s share of the market increased to 6.7%, which is marginally up from the 6.6% market share Apple held in the same 2019 quarter.

What’s interesting to note, however, is that Apple’s growth came at the same time as the overall computer market grew by 2.8%, fueled by the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns.

Apple held onto its fourth-place position in the PC vendor market, behind manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo. During the second quarter, Lenovo was the top vendor, shipping an incredible 16.197 million PCs.

It holds an impressive 25% share of the market.

HP is just behind Lenovo, shipping 16.165 million PCs in the same period, representing a 24.9% share of the overall market, just a fraction smaller than Lenovo, and no doubt pushing the two companies to enter into rivalries to increase market share and overall dominance.

Dell finished in third place in this quarter, shipping 10.65 million PCs, representing a 16.4% share of the market. Interestingly, Dell saw a drop in shipments from 2019, perhaps due to Lenovo and HP growing their shares and offering more affordable work-from-home PCs.

Behind Apple, Acer and ASUS shipped 4 million and 3.6 million PCs respectively.

Speaking of the news, Garter said: “Mobile PC growth was particularly strong, driven by several factors including business continuity for remote working, online education and consumers’ entertainment needs.

“However, this uptick in mobile PC demand will not continue beyond 2020, as shipments were mainly boosted by short-term business needs due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
