Apple has introduced the new MacBook Air M5, bringing notable gains in CPU and GPU performance, expanded AI capabilities, double the starting storage, and improved wireless connectivity — all within the same thin, light aluminum design that defines the MacBook Air line.

Available in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, the new MacBook Air continues to target students, professionals, and everyday users who want performance without the bulk of a pro laptop.

Performance With M5 and On-Device AI

The MacBook Air M5 features a 10-core CPU and an up-to-10-core GPU, including a Neural Accelerator inside each GPU core. This architecture boosts AI workloads and graphics-intensive tasks while maintaining energy efficiency.

Apple states that AI performance is up to 4x faster compared to the M4 generation and up to 9.5x faster than M1-based MacBook Air models. Tasks such as on-device large language model processing, AI video enhancement, and advanced photo editing benefit directly from this improvement.

The GPU also features enhanced shader cores and a third-generation ray tracing engine, improving performance in 3D rendering, creative applications, and gaming workflows.

Unified memory bandwidth increases to 153GB/s, a 28 percent improvement over M4. This supports smoother multitasking, faster app launches, and improved responsiveness when working across large creative projects.

Storage and SSD Improvements

MacBook Air M5 now starts at 512GB of storage — double the previous base configuration. For users managing large projects, high-resolution media, or AI models locally, this baseline expansion reduces the need for immediate upgrades.

The internal SSD delivers up to 2x faster read and write speeds compared to the prior generation. Faster storage directly impacts:

  • Large photo library imports
  • Video editing timeline scrubbing
  • Project load times
  • AI dataset processing

Configurations are available up to 4TB for users with heavier storage demands.

Battery Life and Wireless Connectivity

MacBook Air M5 maintains up to 18 hours of battery life. Apple emphasizes that performance remains consistent whether plugged in or running on battery power.

The new Apple-designed N1 wireless chip enables Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. This improves throughput, reduces latency, and strengthens connection stability in crowded environments. For remote work, video calls, and large file transfers, the upgrade improves daily reliability.

Design, Display, and Audio

The MacBook Air keeps its fanless aluminum design, offering silent operation. The 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch Liquid Retina displays support 500 nits of brightness and 1 billion colors, maintaining visual clarity for both creative and productivity workflows.

The 12MP Center Stage camera enhances video calls with automatic framing and Desk View support. A three-microphone array improves voice clarity, and the immersive speaker system supports Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos.

Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports and MagSafe charging. The system supports up to two external displays, expanding workspace flexibility for students and professionals.

macOS Tahoe and Apple Intelligence

macOS Tahoe complements the hardware with updated productivity tools and Apple Intelligence features. Live Translation in Messages, intelligent Shortcuts actions, enhanced Spotlight search, and deeper system-level AI integration allow users to automate workflows and extract information across documents and apps.

Continuity features enable seamless integration with iPhone, including relayed cellular calls and Live Activities appearing directly on Mac.

Pricing and Availability

MacBook Air M5 is available in sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver. Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11.

The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 starts at $1,199 (U.S.), while the 15-inch model starts at $1,399. Education pricing is available.

The new MacBook Air M5 builds on its position as Apple’s most popular laptop by combining expanded storage, faster AI performance, improved wireless connectivity, and sustained battery life — all within a thin and silent design.
