Meta announces Meta Quest Pro virtual reality headset

Meta has launched a new AR/VR headset, months ahead of Apple’s rumored Apple Reality Pro device.

The company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta Quest Pro, a mixed reality headset that retails for $1,500 in the United States. The device features a number of tools and functionalities we expect from the Apple AR/VR headset, which is widely expected to be announced and released in January 2023.

The new headset uses both augmented and virtual reality and features “pancake lenses” which offer a high-resolution display. The company says that the new device has a curved battery at the back to improve the ergonomics, and it features high-resolution outward-facing cameras offering four times as many pixels as its predecessor, the Meta Quest 2.

Although we can only compare the device to rumors, it’s believed Apple’s device will feature at least 12 cameras to monitor things such as eye tracking, expression detection, and spatial awareness.

Meta says that the new AR/VR headset will “combine the physical world with the virtual” allowing users to do things like Microsoft Teams meetings. Other use cases outside of gaming remain to be seen, but it could open up an entirely new ecosystem for consumers and professionals alike.
