Microsoft Admits Pulled Windows Update May Have Hit Settings

At the weekend, Microsoft unexpectedly withdrew the first major Windows 10 update‘s availability through the official media creation tool (MCT). The Redmond firm has recently explained that it acted having noticed that the update might have accidentally altered a number of privacy settings.

On its Support site, the company clarified that “when the November update was installed, a few settings preferences may have inadvertently not been retained for advertising ID, Background apps, SmartScreen Filter, and Sync with devices.”

This situation apparently applied to users who downloaded the update through the MCT, which is intended to help IT professionals and enthusiasts to speed up the process of installing the latest Windows 10 build on multiple PCs.

A Microsoft spokesperson told The Register that the company will restore modified user settings “over the coming days”. The corporation also apologized for the inconvenience and noted that future installs of the update will not alter user settings in this manner.
