Microsoft has launched a full version of Office for Android tablets after the software was previously made available as a Preview. Android owners can now download Word, Excel and PowerPoint for free. Although some functions have been held back for Office 365 subscribers, users can still create, save and print documents.
Those wishing to subscribe are permitted to install the full software on five tablets and five phones. They also receive cloud storage, 60 Skype minutes and Microsoft support. To use Office for Android, you need a device of at least 7-inches, with 1GB of RAM, Android 4.4. KitKat or higher and an ARM-based chip.
Microsoft first offered Office for Android to iPad owners last year. The company was criticized for not offering the software before they decided to cater for other non-Windows operating systems. Microsoft chief Satya Nadella said that the launch was an integral part of a strategy designed to help people “be productive across all devices” with Microsoft software.
It’s thought Microsoft held back from making their software available for users of devices from rival companies in order to try and heighten sales of their own hardware including their Surface tablet.
