Microsoft has refreshed its tablet range. The company has launched a new entry-level device that runs more software. The Surface 3 features an Intel chip rather than the ARM-based processor in the Surface 2. It will also use Windows 8 instead of Windows RT. The move is being seen as an attempt to match the success of the high-spec Surface Pro 3.
Microsoft saw a rise in shipments of Surface tablets at the end of last year, with most demand being linked to the Pro 3. The company now has 3.2% of the tablet market, with Apple seeing a decline in iPad sales. The iPad is still the best-selling tablet brand.
The Surface 3 is being targeted at students, schools and mobile workers looking for something small and light. It will be released on the 7th May. Microsoft claims that the device can be a suitable replacement for a laptop. Users will be able to use a touchscreen pen with the device, although this must be purchased separately.
The incorporation of Windows 8 into the device means that users will be granted access to more programs. Experts say it won’t be able to run video editing, CAD software or graphics-intensive games, but will be a good match for those looking for something less powerful.
