If you are waiting to see the first Windows 10 smartphones, you can now get a better idea of how they should compare to the competition in terms of hardware. That’s because Microsoft has just put forward its recommended specs for Windows 10 smartphones of three different categories.
This advice, posted by NokiaPowerUser, appears to be aimed at companies developing, or set to develop, smartphones running Windows 10 Mobile, the mobile-optimized version of Windows 10. In providing this advice, Microsoft has sorted such smartphones in three distinct categories: Value Phone, Value Phablet and Premium Phone.
These categories are largely self-explanatory for smartphone enthusiasts, and Microsoft specifies that a typical smartphone should house “cellular connectivity, a touch screen, rechargeable power source, and other components”. According to the specs, which can be seen in full on the NokiaPowerUser website, advised minimum features of budget handsets include 1GB of RAM and a 5-megapixel rear camera, while top-end phones should be under 7.5mm thick.
It seems sensible to assume that Microsoft’s upcoming new Lumia smartphones will strongly adhere to these specs. The computer version of Windows 10 has been well-received – but, in the mobile space, the Redmond company still faces an uphill struggle to convert many iPhone and Android users.
