Looking at a device’s screen in the evening can, research suggests, wreck havoc with your sleeping. However, this could soon cease to be an issue for Windows 10 users, as Microsoft is evidently testing a feature whereby, with a flick of a virtual switch, harmful blue light from the screen could be reduced.
Yesterday, Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14915 for PC and Mobile – the latest beta version of Windows 10. However, while it looks like very much an incremental update, Twitter user “Core” has spotted, within the update, references to a “BlueLightReduction” feature.
Windows.Data.BlueLightReduction
Present in 14915, has a Quick Actions toggle, disabled from being accessed in rs_prerelease. Thanks MS.— Albacore (@thebookisclosed) August 31, 2016
While the feature is reportedly not yet functional, it would apparently – upon being enabled – let users toggle a switch in Action Center – the notification center in Windows 10 – to reduce the amount of blue light that their screens emit. Nonetheless, it’s not entirely clear whether only particular devices will be able to use it.
In fact, it’s still possible that the feature could be dropped entirely before the update gets a full public release early next year. If Microsoft does put it into place, it would be following Apple – which, with the release of iOS 9.3 in March, added the similar Night Shift feature for select iPhones and iPads.
