Microsoft to Offer Windows 10 as Free Update in July

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be available as a free update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users from 28 July. This release looks set to revolutionize the long-running Windows operating system and this update will remain free over the course of a year.

Though Windows 8.1 – most notable for its restoration of the Start menu – was released as a free upgrade for users of the much-derided Windows 8, the similar availability of Windows 10 is just part of a major change in business practices for Microsoft, which – as previously reported by Apple Magazine – is dramatically changing the way in which it will update Windows in future.

Typically, people wishing to get hold of a new version of Windows have had to pay substantially for it – either through buying the new release for installing on their computer or buying a whole new computer with the OS pre-installed. As Windows 8 was designed to work well on tablets as well as desktop and laptop computers, we expect many users of Windows tablets to also take advantage of this offer of a free update to Windows 10.
