Mid-2024 Set to Welcome M3 Ultra Mac Studio, Mac Pro Update Uncertain

The tech world is abuzz with the latest report indicating a mid-2024 release for a new Mac Studio model, equipped with the advanced M3 Ultra chip.

Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, sourcing from ICsmart, forecasts this update to occur around the same time of year as 2023’s introduction of the current Mac Studio, which featured M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. This prediction points towards a potential unveiling at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event in 2024.

The Mac Studio’s upcoming model appears to be taking a significant leap in processing power. The anticipated M3 Ultra chip is rumored to be manufactured using TSMC’s N3E node, mirroring the technology expected in the iPhone 16’s A18 chip.

This shift to the N3E process, an enhanced version of TSMC’s 3nm production, suggests a jump in performance and efficiency. The N3E node will mark Apple’s first venture into this advanced technology, distinct from the current N3B process used in M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, as well as the A17 Pro.

However, the absence of the Mac Pro in these recent discussions raises questions. Typically, the Mac Pro and Mac Studio receive similar updates, as seen with the M2 Ultra chip last year. Yet, current rumors do not indicate a parallel update for the Mac Pro with the M3 Ultra chip.

The decision to utilize the N3E node for the M3 Ultra chip, if true, would break Apple’s tradition of consistent fabrication processes across its chip lineup. This deviation might imply an accelerated timeline for the introduction of M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips, potentially towards the end of 2024.

Such a strategy could be aimed at maintaining the competitive edge of the M3 Ultra Mac Studio against upcoming models.

Despite these intriguing prospects, caution is advised in interpreting these reports, especially regarding the potential use of different fabrication nodes within the same chip family.

Nonetheless, the expectation of a mid-2024 debut for the new Mac Studio remains strong.
