Before long, you might be able to buy a packet of Oreo cookies by turning to a Facebook Messenger chatbot. That’s because Mondelēz International, the conglomerate behind many well-known food favorites, is to significantly up its spending on the Messenger bots platform.
Calling mobile “the most profound disruption we’ve ever seen in business”, Bonin Bough, Mondelēz’s Chief Media and E-Commerce Officer, declared: “Continuing to invest in a large-scale media partnership with Facebook will help us connect our brands with our consumers while fueling growth.” The firm has revealed that the bots will be used for e-commerce and customer support, but declined to specify which brands are developing bots and when they will arrive.

The partnership will cover 52 countries, including the United States, France, Brazil and the United Kingdom – where Cadbury, another of its renowned brands, sells the much-loved Dairy Milk chocolate bars. Terms have not been revealed, but rep Valerie Moens has, according to Adweek, described the deal as “significantly larger” than last year’s Mondēlez-Facebook deal.
