Google’s Motorola Mobility has cut the price of its Moto X phone to spur sales and better compete with rivals including Apple and Samsung.

The phone will now cost $399 without a contract, down from $550, the Libertyville company said on its blog. Sales of the Moto X have been disappointing since its launch in August.

“We’ve been hearing a lot recently from people who want a new premium smartphone at a reasonable price without having to wait for a contract upgrade,” Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of product management, said in the blog post. “That came through especially loud and clear during our holiday flash sales.”

In November, it announced the introduction of a cheaper option, called the Moto G, for $179 without a service contract. It’s set to arrive in the U.S. this month.
