Netflix announces new ad-supported tier

Netflix has announced its long-awaited ad-supported streaming tier.

The company confirmed that the ad-supported tier, known as “Basic With Ads”, will start at $6.99 per month in the United States, which is a few dollars per month cheaper than the standard plan. The new package will sit alongside Basic, Standard, and Premium, offering 720p streaming on the Basic plans and HD and 4K on the higher plans, giving consumers a choice over the streaming quality dependent on their willingness to pay.

Netflix says that most of its TV shows and movies will be the same, though some titles won’t be available on the ad-supported tier due to licensing restrictions. There’s no list of which shows these are, but it’s likely all Netflix-owned content will be available to stream as standard on the platform.

Users that opt for the new ad-supported tier will see around five minutes of adverts per hour, playing before and during the shows. Users on the basic ad-supported tier won’t be able to download content for offline viewing.

Netflix will launch the new package on November 3 in the United States as well as in the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, Korea, Canada, Brazil, Italy, Australia, Japan, and more, with a further rollout expected later.
