Netflix co-founder criticises Apple TV+ rollout and offers recommendations

Netflix’s co-founder Marc Randolph has criticized Apple’s new streaming platform, telling journalists that there are “no excuses” for the service lagging behind Apple TV+ competitors.

Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Marc said that Apple could do a better job with its new streaming platform, which has struggled to gain any meaningful traction in the United States, so much so that the company continues to give away the service for free. According to the report, 62% of Apple TV+ subscribers are currently on a free trial, and at least 29% of those say that they have no plans to pay for a subscription once the free trial expires.

“Right now they have the highest churn rate. You can’t keep replacing people, you’ve got to give them a reason to stay,” said Marc.

“If Apple spent one quarter as much time on content as they do on giveaways they really could play. […] They have no excuse [and] they’re still not in it with both feet. They really have to do the entrepreneurial thing and walk up to the edge of the cliff and jump.”

According to recent streaming data, Apple TV+ has just a 3% market share of the streaming sector in the United States – and that’s only offering its content to users for free. As well as a one-year free trial for those who bought a new Mac or iPhone, Apple has continued to extend its free trial into 2020 and 2021, and the latest promotion means users don’t have to pay for Apple TV+ until July.
