The Sandman

The Sandman | First Look | Netflix

The video you just saw above is the first look trailer for Netflix’s long-awaited The Sandman, a series based on Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed comic book series. In the trailer, we can see the protagonist, Dream, being summoned and imprisoned, which will serve as a premise for the show and some future events.

The Sandman is a long-awaited adaptation of one of the best comic book series ever written and with filming having finished in August 2021, we were delighted that Netflix gave us a first look into the show, despite other information still being scarce. We know that Gaiman’s show will function as a somewhat modernized adaptation of the original comic book stories and that we’re dealing with a multi-season project, but a project that, as of now, still doesn’t have an official release date.

The show, as we know, will star Tom Sturridge as Morpheus (Dream), while Kirby Howell-Baptiste will appear as his sister, Death. Other known cast members include Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps, David Thewlis as John Dee, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Patton Oswalt as the voice of Dream’s raven Matthew, and Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Dream’s sibling.

When asked about how he was planning on approaching the show, Gaiman said: “Doing the Netflix TV series, we’re very much looking at that as going, ‘Okay, it is 2020, let’s say that I was doing Sandman starting in 2020, what would we do? How would we change things? What gender would this character be? Who would this person be? What would be happening? The fact that we have seventy-five issues of Sandman plus — essentially, 13 full books — worth of material, is a really good thing. It’s not a drawback. It’s on our side. And the fact that we’re in a world in which we can take things that only existed in comic book art, and that can now exist in reality.”

As you can see, Gaiman has something very special in store for us and we can’t wait for the show to hit Netflix.
