Netflix is reportedly working on a competitor to Apple Arcade.
The streaming giant could be ready to break into video gaming, according to Bloomberg, with the firm hiring former Electronic Arts exec Mike Verdu as vice president of game development – a clear move that gaming will soon be part of the brand.
Verdu, who also worked for Facebook, has previous experience in bringing games and content to the Oculus VR headset, and thus he’s likely to be tasked with finding the right developers and gaming studios to build content for the platform.
We don’t know how Netflix’s new gaming venture will pan out, or whether the firm will launch original games, but it could choose to enter into the space from a cloud gaming perspective, similar to Google and Amazon’s ventures, or follow Apple Arcade’s stance and launch its own original games based on popular Netflix shows.
The report added that Netflix’s efforts to expand into gaming are at their very early stages, and there’s no date yet on when anything will be officially announced. However, in today’s fast-paced landscape with competition heating up, we’re sure it won’t be long before we hear something concrete from the horse’s mouth.
