Remember Dante? The guy who constantly kicked the living daylights out of various infernal spawns through a series of video games? He was later joined by a guy named Vergil, but the two didn’t venture to explore the world of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy? Ring a bell? Well, whether or not you know whom we’re talking about, Netflix has already announced that a series based on these two characters, the protagonists of the Devil May Cry video game series, will begin development early next year.
Now, Devil May Cry is one of the most popular and lucrative video game franchises in history, with several installments, remakes, and remasters forming part of this great series. The main character is Dante, a demon hunter who has to save the world on several occasions from different demonic threats, each more dangerous and gruesome than the other. Now, continuing on a series of great animated series, Netflix is working on a Devil May Cry series as well, which will fit in great alongside the Castlevania series and The Witcher, both of which feature a similar tone.
Adi Shankar, the producer, and co-writer of the show alongside Alex Larsen talked to IGN Japan and has confirmed that the scripts for the first season of the show are finished. The season will consist of eight episodes and is not meant to be the end of the show, as Shankar confirmed that they are planning a multi-season project that will explore the depths of the world of Devil May Cry.
This will actually be the second Devil May Cry animated adaptation after the 12-episode anime series that aired in 2007. The anime series was set at some point between Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 and followed Dante on yet another adventure with Trish. It has received mixed reviews from critics, which is why we’re hopeful that Shankar’s project will do justice to the franchise.
With production reportedly starting in early 2022, the series doesn’t have a release date just yet, but we hope to get some news from Netflix soon.
