New 12-inch MacBook to support M2 Pro and M2 Max

A new report has revealed the new 12-inch MacBook Apple is working on could support M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.

It had previously been reported that a new 12-inch model would be sold as a new entry-level device, helping Apple compete against cheaper laptop and notebook brands. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first reported that a 12-inch model was in the works, set for release in 2023 or 2024, and though the early details were sketchy, a new report suggests that the model could actually form part of the MacBook Pro line-up.

Majin Bu has taken to Twitter to suggest that the new model will be a 12-inch MacBook Pro with the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, expected to debut next year. It’s thought that the M2 Max will feature a 12-core CPU and up to a 38-core GPU, whilst the M1 Max will have a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU.

If Apple did add a new 12-inch MacBook Pro, it would be the smallest pro device it’s ever launched. The firm has previously offered 12-inch MacBooks in the past, discontinuing the brand in 2019. Apple also offered a 12-inch PowerBook in the early 200s, though this new MacBook would likely have a much smaller form factor.

Right now, we’re taking the news with a pinch of salt, as Apple traditionally saves its high-end spec devices for larger screens – such as the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro, but now that Apple has made the leap to its own custom chips, it’s feasible that the firm would offer a new smaller, high-performance Mac.
