According to a report citing “multiple sources”, the rumored PlayStation 4 revision is indeed coming soon. Reportedly, it is internally known as “the NEO” and will feature greater speed in its processor and memory, plus a more powerful graphics chip allowing for games reaching 4K resolution.
The above leaked specs, reported by GiantBomb, are undoubtedly promising – the current PlayStation 4 can show images and video in 4K resolution, but games have to contend with a more basic 1080p resolution. The improved specs of the NEO will enable smoother-running games, but the two PlayStation 4 versions will otherwise differ little…
Apparently, Sony will not allow developers to make software solely for the NEO or offer in-game bonuses, such as gameplay modes and unlockables, strictly for NEO owners. Sony is also said to have told developers that the two consoles will be compatible with all of the same external hardware.
It all suggests that Sony is intent on building upon the strengths of the original PlayStation 4 without irritating gamers who have already paid big money for that console. To what extent this careful strategy will genuinely fuel success for the NEO, however, remains to be seen.
