New Apple ad showcases Portrait Lighting mode on iPhone 8 Plus

Apple has released a new video to demonstrate how users can use dramatic lighting effects via Portrait Lighting mode on the iPhone 8 Plus.

The ad, titled “Portraits of Her”, features Shannon Wise from The Shacks singing the band’s single “This Strange Effect” as she walks down a sidewalk and transitions through a range of Portrait Lighting mode effects including Natural Light, Studio Light, Contour Light and Stage Light.

The 38 second ad ends with the iPhone photographer showing Wise her portrait as he taps through the various effects in the Camera app interface, demonstrating perfectly how users can use this new feature.

This feature, on the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, works by calculating specific algorithms to see how facial features act with ambient light. During the company’s time developing this feature, they studied the works of professional portrait photographers and famous painters to see how light has been used in the visual arts throughout history.
