A battery is being developed that will be capable of putting out any fires that might occur within a smartphone.
A research team from Stanford University developed a battery that contained triphenyl phosphate (TPP), a highly flame retardant material. The TPP was positioned within the electrolyte fluid inside the shell of the battery and is designed to release itself if it the battery gets too hot.
The battery is a standard lithium-ion battery that can be found in many other kinds of devices. They’re seen as reliable, but can pose a considerable fire risk
This is no doubt in response to the recent controversy surrounding Samsungs line of S7 smartphones, many of which were reported to have burst into flames for no apparent reason. Samsung have not yet published the results of their investigation into the cause of the fires, but many reports have suggested that the battery was to blame.
