New “Mac Studio” will reportedly slot in between Mac mini and Mac Pro

Well, we did previously report the prediction of the well-placed Mark Gurman that 2022 will be a big year for Mac releases – so a new report indicating that Apple is developing a brand new “Mac Studio” computer probably should be no great surprise.

The “exclusive” report by the 9to5Mac website cited “sources” as claiming that the Mac Studio will target professional users, and will be additional to the new Mac mini and Mac Pro that have already been rumored. The website added that the Mac Studio will be principally based on the Mac mini, but will incorporate much more powerful hardware.

The Cupertino company is apparently working on two versions of the Mac Studio; one housing the M1 Max chip also seen in the 2021 MacBook Pro, and another with a variant of the Apple Silicon chip that offers even more power than the existing M1 Max.

9to5Mac said that according to its sources, the codename for the Mac Studio within Apple is “J375”. However, it is not yet definitively confirmed that the new computer, which will sit between the Mac mini and Mac Pro, will actually be known as the Mac Studio when it finally goes on sale.

As for when the Mac Studio will officially break cover, 9to5Mac implied that – in light of Gurman’s prediction of new Macs being launched at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June – we might only have a “few months” to wait for an announcement from Apple.
