Social network Twitter will introduce new privacy-led features in the coming months.
They’re designed to give users greater control over their content and follower lists, and allow users to decide who can see their posts and likes. According to Bloomberg, Twitter will allow users to archive tweets so that they can only be seen by the account holder, and follower lists can be edited.
The idea is to make people feel more comfortable about tweeting, with Twitter hoping the changes will help to increase its user base and encourage more people to interact and post content on the platform.
Research from the company suggests that the majority of users on the platform don’t understand privacy basics, such as whether their account is private or public, meaning they’re less likely to engage on the platform. That’s because private accounts’ content cannot be seen by other people, even if they’re tagged.
Twitter is now expected to prompt users to review whether they want their account to be private or public from September. The firm is also expected to allow users to remove followers, hide tweets that have been liked, and remove themselves from conversations if they no longer want to participate.
Although the company hasn’t announced a timeline for these new features, with many in the concept phase, it’s expected that users will be able to ‘remove followers’ from later this month.
