Today, a student membership option has been introduced for Apple Music, allowing students enrolled at an eligible college or university to enjoy the streaming service for just $4.99 per month.
That represents a discount of 50% on the usual monthly subscription price of $9.99, and shows that Apple is intent on turning the heat on Spotify, which already offers a similarly discounted student membership option for its Spotify Premium service.
TechCrunch reports that Apple Music’s student discount is, following sign-up, available for up to four years. Those years don’t have to be continuous; a student who takes brief breaks in their education can stop and start their membership as is convenient for them.
Apple, which will also work with the student verification tech firm UNiDAYS to ensure that only students genuinely enrolled at an eligible institution can sign up for the discount, is now rolling out the student membership option in the US, UK, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
