New Xiaomi Phablets to Take On iPhone?

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has launched two new flagship tablets whilst announcing it plans to take on Apple directly.

Xiaomi boss Lei Jun claimed that the new Mi Note was thinner and lighter than the iPhone 6 Plus. The device is to retail for around half the price of the Apple slate, selling for around $370. Xiaomi have emerged from obscurity to quickly become one of the biggest selling phone firms in the world, with analysts claiming that it was the third most successful in the world last year.

Xiaomi was founded in 2010. The company have also announced the launch of the Mi Note Pro, which offer a higher resolution as well as a faster processor than the Mi Note. It features a 13MP rear camera, which has been built by Sony, as well as a 4MP front-facing shooter. The Mi Note Pro is expected to sell for around $530.

Despite its success, the company has been criticized for “copying” Apple. Euromonitor’s Wee Teck Loo, compared Xiaomi to a “teenager” attempting to act like an adult whilst clinging “on to his basket for comfort – Apple bashing”. Some analysts said that Xiaomi look set to be known for their low prices rather than their innovation.
