Nintendo’s most recent Nintendo Direct event, which aired on September 23, 2021, has revealed a lot of interesting information for gamers, but also one that heavily concerns the world of cinema. Namely, during the broadcast, Nintendo confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. animated movie is in the works, and, as it seems, it is going to be completely accurate when the character designs are concerned. Not much is known about the movie at this point, but a released post confirmed a planned release date sometime during the 2022 holiday season, which might indicate a Christmas-y theme for the movie; the official North American release date is December 21, 2022, with release dates for other regions to be announced at a later date.
Nintendo, surprisingly enough, announced the full voice cast of the movie, and we’re happy to say that the movie is going to feature some really big Hollywood names. The confirmed cast members are Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants) as Princess Peach, Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Luigi, Jack Black (School of Rock) as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) as Toad, Seth Rogen (Superbad) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Anchorman) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (Teen Titans) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (The Irishman) as Spike.
As you can see, the movie is not only going to feature some of Hollywood’s biggest names in animated roles, but also all of the major Mario characters, as well as some interesting additions in the form of Donkey and Cranky Kong, who are part of Nintendo’s larger video game universe.
This is the second time that the Mario Bros. are going to appear on the big screen, after the infamous 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, and Samantha Mathis. We have high hopes for this movie and seeing how Detective Pikachu turned out to be a major success for Nintendo, we’re quite hopeful that the cast and crew are going to deliver on their promises.
