With the highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch making a hastily making its way to store shelves this March, Nintendo has announced that they are going to bring the development of Wii U games to a close.
In an interview with Polygon, president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime stated that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the final Wii U game to be released by Nintendo.
“From a first-party standpoint, there’s no new development coming after the launch of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”
This has left one of the tech demos that Nintendo has already been showcased to be shelved indefinitely, with no signs of further development. Project Giant Robot was a tech demo created by industry legend Shigeru Miyamoto that made its debut at E3 2014.
Overall, the Wii U has failed to live up to Nintendo’s past successes like the Wii or even the Gamecube. The console is yet to be discontinued from production, but with this announcement from Nintendo coming after the console has been around for only 4 and a half years.
However, this doesn’t mean that the console is going to be forgotten about. Third party developers are still welcome to create new games for the console, and the online features for games like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 will still see some updates from Nintendo in the future.
