Games giant Nintendo looks intent on reversing its long term financial decline by expanding into the world of filmmaking – and the company’s first film could arrive within just a few years.
The corporation’s president, Tatsumi Kimishima, has told The Asahi Shimbun that Nintendo is currently looking for a movie production company to partner. “We want to do as much as we can by ourselves,” Kimishima explained – a significant departure from Nintendo’s previous endeavors in the movie business…

These endeavors have been limited to Nintendo licensing some of its popular characters to filmmakers. This strategy resulted in the high profile turkey Super Mario Bros., a live-action adventure that starred Bob Hoskins as the world’s least conventional plumber and was critically mauled upon its theatrical release in 1993.
However, with Nintendo now apparently set to be much more heavily involved in the production of films featuring its characters, it should be able to exert a greater degree of quality control. The company intends to release its first movie, which will target various global markets, in two to three years’ time.
