Nintendo Lowers Price of Entry-Level 2DS System to $79.99

The Nintendo 2DS, the cheaper alternative to the more sophisticated Nintendo 3DS, is set to see its suggested retail price reduced from $99.99 to a more tempting $79.99.

Shorn of the 3D capability of its better-known counterpart, the Nintendo 2DS is marketed by Nintendo as a “kid-friendly” portable system. In a press release, Nintendo says that, with the inclusion of Mario Kart 7 on some units, this new price cut will make the console “even more appealing for parents who are looking for an entry-level gaming system for their younger gamers.”

First launched in October 2013, the Nintendo 2DS sticks to 2D graphics, but is capable of playing Nintendo 3DS titles and almost all Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games. It also comes with a unique design for smaller hands to more easily handle.

The new price cut will come into effect from May 20 – while a new child-friendly game for the system, Kirby: Planet Robobot, will arrive on June 10. Two other titles aimed at younger gamers, Style Savvy: Fashion Forward and Disney Magical World 2, will come later this year.
