Nintendo have filed for a patent for its Game Boy games to be played on devices including phones and tablets. It’s thought that the filing is an update of a 2012 patent. Some are suggesting that this means that games giant are ready to enter the mobile space, or that it is eager to protect its back catalog.
No plans regarding its old Game Boy games have been announced by the company, who have previously denied speculation that mini-games for mobile devices were being produced by their team. The company had said that its original games would be tough to replicate on touch-screen devices.
The Game Boy was one of the most iconic devices of the late 1980s and 1990s and was launched a quarter of a century ago in 1989. It was the first significant mobile gaming device and went onto sell over 100 million units after it was first released onto the Japanese market. Some of the most iconic Game Boy games included Tetris, Super Mario Bros and Pokémon. Over 450 different titles were released for the device.
