Nokia has revealed its plan to purchase Withings, a maker of health and fitness accessories, in a deal worth $192 million. Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri has said that the move will further his Finnish firm’s “strategic interest” in health, as well as its “position in the Internet of Things.”
Though Wittings offers a range of accessories intended for tracking and improving health and fitness, its best-known products include the iPhone-compatible smartwatch Activite. This wearable, pictured above, couples a conventional timepiece design with sleep and fitness tracking capabilities.
The acquisition, which is expected to close early in 2016’s third quarter, could help Nokia to make a comeback in consumer electronics. In 2013, the company agreed to sell its mobile phone division to Microsoft – a move which decisively ended Nokia’s run as a major player in the mobile phone market.
