Peculiar Now-or-Tonight Windows 10 Upgrade Notice Appears

When would you like to upgrade to Windows 10? Now? No? It’ll have to be tonight, then. That’s the strange message that Microsoft has recently been sending to users of Windows 7 or 8, with a new notice that almost seems to be pushing Windows 10 down their throats.

The new upgrade window, which reportedly started appearing at the weekend and often pops up shortly after a computer running Windows 7 or 8 is started up, gives the user just two options for when they can upgrade to Windows 10: immediately or in the approaching evening.

It’s still possible to paraphrase Napoleon and say: “Not tonight, Microsoft!” That’s because you can still click on the red ‘X’ box in the corner of the window to close it and get on with whatever you were wanting to do. Nonetheless, that option isn’t made too obvious, meaning that many more casual Windows users could be duped into thinking that Microsoft is giving them an ultimatum.

Microsoft has defended the new upgrade notice to The Register by implying that the Redmond company’s only intention here is to make it easier for Windows 7 and 8 users to find one of what it calls “our most important updates”. So – pushy, or just convenient? You decide…
