Percy Jackson and the Olympians: here’s everything we know about the new Disney+ series

Disney+ on phone

Disney+ has officially given the green light to a Percy Jackson TV show and fans are very excited.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be based on Rick Riordan’s book series, which chronicles the tales of 12-year-old Percy Jackson, who discovers that he is a demigod (half human, half god) and descendant of Poseidon.

Riordan himself broke the news to fans on Twitter and Instagram, and will be involved with writing the pilot, alongside Jon Steinberg, and serving as an executive producer. Disney+ has promised that the series will be closely aligned with the books, much to the delight of Riordan who reportedly disapproved of the two existing Percy Jackson films.

James Bobin has been brought on to direct the first episode, having recently directed Disney+’s The Mysterious Benedict Society and Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

The series promises to be an adaptation for all ages, “with all the excitement, action and mythology fans of the books expect and love.” Fans are already expressing their excitement, especially as most found themselves underwhelmed by the two film adaptations that were released in 2010 and 2013.

As the announcement was only made on January 25, we don’t have any potential release dates or casting announcements just yet, but we’re sure it won’t be long before we’re hearing rumors about who will be billed on the cast. Petitions have already started online to have Logan Lerman, who portrayed Percy in the original movies, brought on board to play Poseidon.

It’s going to be a while before production begins, but fans of the series can still watch the first two films on Disney+, on any Apple device.
