Periscope Live Broadcasts to Auto-Play in Twitter iOS App

Though it was already possible for Periscope live broadcasts to be shared on the Twitter mobile app, from today, such broadcasts can play within tweets without any need for the Periscope app.

The Periscope live video streaming app is available on both iOS and Android. Now, with the Twitter app for iOS, a shared Periscope feed can auto-play within the tweet. There isn’t even the need for a Periscope account!

There is also the option of tapping the video to make it full-screen, in the process also bringing up comments and hearts from other viewers. The new Periscope integration is being rolled out for the iOS app “over the next few days”, while Android and web users should get the features “as soon as they’re ready”.

Periscope CEO and co-founder Kayvon Beykpour has enthused that “Periscope broadcasts in Twitter timelines offer a new way to experience the world, giving Periscope broadcasters a window to a massive new audience.”

However, The Guardian notes concerns that, as Periscope broadcasts can last for hours, those that automatically play within tweets could result in users inadvertently consuming much larger amounts of cellular data. Thankfully, the auto-playback can be disabled within the Twitter app’s settings.
