Today, Sony announced that it had sold over 40 million units of its amazingly successful PlayStation 4 console worldwide. In fact, the PS4 is currently the fastest-selling PlayStation console in history.
In a press release, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and Global CEO, Andrew House, said that his company is “truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time”.
He added that Sony will continue the PlayStation 4’s momentum by “offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services”. May 10 saw the release of the eagerly anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which clocked impressive sales of over 2.7m units within just a week.
It looks like the PlayStation 4 has soared far ahead in the current generation of video game consoles. Microsoft no longer regularly reports how the worldwide sales of the nearest competitor, the Xbox One, are faring; however, at an earnings call in January, EA hinted that those sales had reached about 19m.
