PlayStation is rolling out a new feature that allows account owners to use passkeys as a substitute for traditional passwords. This update will enable users to log into their PlayStation accounts through the web, via an app, or directly on PlayStation devices using a passkey.
The integration of passkeys is scheduled to begin this week, offering users the option to authenticate their accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode on an iPhone.
Passkeys offer a more streamlined and secure login experience compared to conventional passwords. By leveraging biometric authentication methods such as Face ID and Touch ID, passkeys simplify the sign-in process.
Moreover, they enhance security by being impervious to common online threats like phishing attacks. This is because passkeys eliminate the need for a physical password that could be stolen or an SMS code that might be intercepted.
The concept of passkeys is not new, with Apple having introduced support for them in 2022. Other major platforms and retailers, including Twitter, Google, PayPal, Best Buy, Microsoft, and eBay, have already implemented or are in the process of adopting passkey support.
