Qualcomm has debuted an under-display fingerprint sensor that could launch in Android and iOS devices as soon as this autumn. The company appeared at a virtual CES 2021, showing off the new 3D Sonic Sensor, which is 50% faster and 77% larger than its previous iteration.
According to a spokesperson for the company, the new product will appear on high-end flagship Android smartphones from as soon as the second half of 2021, and it could even come to iOS devices, allowing the company to combine the power of Face ID and Touch ID.
It had previously been reported that Apple was planning to reintroduce Touch ID to the iPhone line-up, and now Qualcomm’s technology is suitably ready, it could be months away.
Ming-Chi Kuo, who has previously reported a number of accurate Apple releases, said last year that the company could bring both Touch ID and Face ID to the iPhone 13, and added that it would be Qualcomm that would supply the technology. He reiterated the statement in October, confirming that an under-display Touch ID option was coming to the iPhone soon.
But why would you need both Touch ID and Face ID? One of the biggest benefits is that users could perform more secure authentications, and have an alternative unlocking method.
