A rare Nintendo game from 1987 has attracted an eBay bid of $99,600. The copy of Stadium Events is “factory sealed” and has apparently been verified for authenticity by a leading video game authority. The interest aroused by the game – called Stadium Events – is said to be representative of what is a growing market for nostalgia around retro gaming.
Experts say that video games have now been around for so long that early works could now be seen as historical artifacts. The game, which was made by Bandai, is thought to be the rarest Nintendo title available anywhere. The copy in question is one of a small run printed by Bandai before it sold the rights to Nintendo, who then recalled all copies from shelves in order to replace them with versions that worked with their own Power Pad. Original copies only worked with Bandai’s Family Fun Control Mat.
It’s thought that there may be only two copies of the Bandai version of Stadium Events in existence. The seller himself says that he used to work at Nintendo and has owned the game since the 1990s. Bidding on the game started at $5,000 earlier this month.
