Apple’s iPod touch was one of the company’s biggest success stories in the late 2000s and early 2010s, offering consumers an affordable, cutting-edge way to listen to their favorite music, chat to friends over iMessage, and access the App Store – including that infamous beer drinking app!
But we’ve come a long way since then, and below, we’ve put together reasons why it’s time to say goodbye to the iPod touch, and make way for a new era of affordable tech for young people.
It’s not regularly updated
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why Apple should pull the trigger on the iPod touch is because the device hasn’t received a significant upgrade in years. The 7th-gen launched in 2019, and the 6th in 2005. If Apple can’t commit to annual upgrades, then perhaps it’s time to finally say goodbye.
iPhones are more accessible
One of the reasons why the iPod touch was such a popular product was that it offered an entryway into the world of iOS. For young people and those who could not justify the price of an iPhone, the iPod touch allowed them to feel like part of the same world. Times have changed, and now the iPhone is more affordable than ever, with the iPhone SE priced at just $399 in the United States.
Apple Watch shows us the future
Last year, Apple took the decision to introduce the Apple Watch SE, an affordable version of its popular smartwatch aimed at children and young people. Rather than launching a dedicated kids device, Apple instead invested in software and now allows parents to control their children’s watches from their own phones. Apple’s already gone some way in doing that with Screen Time, but could further give parents control over their kids’ iPhones to make them safer and more useful.
The future is wireless
Demand for the iPhone 12 has proven that consumers want 5G-enabled devices so they can stream and play until their heart’s content, wherever they are in the world. The iPod touch is limited in that it needs a WiFi connection to stream from Apple Music, and the number of games available on the iPod touch is limited for the same reason. Discontinuing the iPod touch will push people over to iPhone, so they can experience a truly wireless future, where WiFi is a thing of the past.
