Reese Witherspoon’s Hollywood renaissance looks set to continue unabated, following news that the star of the well-received drama Wild will also take center stage in the upcoming dark thriller Cold. Witherspoon will also co-produce the feature through her thriving Pacific Standard Films company.
Further news about the plot of Cold remains thin on the ground for the time being, but it has been described by the Hollywood Reporter, which also broke the news about Witherspoon’s starring role in the film, as having “supernatural elements”. The project was originally pitched by Bill Marsilii and has been acquired by Lionsgate for, according to a source, “mid- to high-six figures”.
Since it was set up in 2012, Pacific Standard has scored a number of dramatic hits, including Gone Girl and Wild. Witherspoon took the lead role in the latter movie, a biopic of the novelist Cheryl Strayed, to considerable critical acclaim. This certainly gives us confidence that she has the necessary gravitas to carry what is apparently a similarly austere project in the form of Cold.
This new role will also be a significant departure from her lead as a bumbling runaway cop in the buddy comedy Hot Pursuit, which is among the movies recently added to iTunes.
