REVIEW: Candy Crush Jelly Saga (iOS)

Candy Crush is back! Yes, that three-match puzzler that you routinely see scaling the upper echelons of the top-grossing iOS apps chart. But while, metaphorically-speaking, it might have got some flashy new clothes, it’s still largely, for better or worse, the same cheeky little rascal that you remember.

So, there’s still largely the same addictive gameplay, deliberately tricky puzzles, cute graphics and limited free-to-play structure. Not that Jelly Saga is a complete rehash; first and foremost, it gives you the task of spreading, rather than eliminating, jelly in order to win. We also like the new turn-based boss battles, where you can think tactically to spread jelly further than the Jelly Queen.

However, all of this only slightly distracts from the fact that there is no big reinvention of the wheel here. If you love Candy Crush, playing Jelly Saga will feel like meeting back up with an old friend. If you don’t… you likely still won’t. King Digital Entertainment’s latest is now available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
