The upbeat title of Fergie’s mid-tempo new single has sparked speculation that its release was the Black Eyed Peas’ singer’s attempt to reassure those shocked by this week’s election of Donald Trump to the US Presidency. However, even ignoring this political context, it remains a great bit of froth in its own right.
“Bit of froth” is a pretty apt way to describe it; with its tropical synths that can be heard right from the opening, “Life Goes On” can readily evoke the feeling of gently sipping on a fruit drink while relaxing in the sun of somewhere like Hawaii. And, like Fergie herself, this song has a great sense of fun.
“Life goes on, with or without you/Damn it, baby, what you gonna do,” she warbles, adding: “You could go or you could stay/Who cares anyway?” You can easily imagine the message she’s trying to send out: “Forget all of the madness that has unfolded recently, and just join me on the dance floor!”
And, if this is how she’s going to invite us, we’ve got even more reason to look forward to her long-awaited second album – whenever it will eventually arrive. In the meantime, you can stream “Life Goes On” from Apple Music or, for just $1.29, buy it from the iTunes Store.
