Young British songbird Jess Glynne has become rather a woman of the moment, having scored five successive number one singles in her home country and even amassed a following in the US after her guest vocals on last year’s Clean Bandit hit “Rather Be”. However, judging by her first solo album, “of the moment” could turn out to be true in a tragically more literal sense…
There’s certainly a beautiful collage of moods and styles throughout I Cry When I Laugh. So, along with the classically-inspired “Rather Be”, there’s the reassuring “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself”, the official video for which we have posted here, and a real personal favorite of ours, the lovably exuberant “You Can Find Me”.
However, rather than show off Ms Glynne’s musical range, this variety more often gives the impression of a mixed bag in which she neither clearly gets across a distinct musical character nor even simply provides enough highlight tracks to make up for the scattering of duds. We wouldn’t wholeheartedly recommend this album; however, if you like what you have already heard of it, you can read a lot more about Jess Glynne in issue #203 of AppleMagazine, which will be released this Friday for iOS devices.
