REVIEW: Micro Machines (iOS)

It wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that, over the years, the Micro Machines games have become much-loved staples of the cutesy racing genre often led by Mario Kart. So, is this new iOS addition to the franchise a toy wonder, or should it simply be put back into the box?

If you’ve loved any of the previous Micro Machines games, and perhaps even if you haven’t, first impressions are certainly pleasing. There’s a lot of color and imaginative detail in the racing environments, just as you would expect – while the control system, which leaves the accelerating part automatic, has clearly been thoughtfully adapted for easy, pick-up-and-play use on mobile devices.

We are especially fond of the “packs” element, whereby success in races and other game modes can lead you to pick up virtual packs of Micro Machines toy parts for putting together new vehicles to take to the track. It’s a shame, then, that the free-to-download game is so stuffed with in-app purchases left, right and centre that playing it for lengthy no-pay periods can become a real grind.
