REVIEW: Moana (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The musicians working on Disney’s recently-released cinematic hit Moana were, like the broader team behind the movie, careful to respect Polynesian culture with their craft. It really shows in the official soundtrack, which is now available in both standard and deluxe versions.

However, whichever version you stream on Apple Music or buy from the iTunes Store, you are unlikely to be disappointed by either the quality or breadth of what is on offer. The great songs include “You’re Welcome”, sung in a wonderfully jolly manner by Duane Johnson, who voices the film’s demigod Maui.

Other songs worth repeated listens – and available on both versions of the album – include the film’s lead voice actress Auli’i Cravalho’s sweet “How Far I’ll Go” and Jemaine Clement’s “Shiny”. Meanwhile, Mark Mancini’s score effectively captures the relaxing island atmosphere.

Even a brief listen could put you in the mood to don Polynesian garb and start dancing like the islanders do… or, for that matter, go and see the film, which has attracted a lot of critical acclaim.
