REVIEW: Photonomie – 360 Photo – Immersive Panorama (iOS)

You might have noticed a few 360-degree photos, which let you enjoy a 3D view of the scene by tilting your mobile device, cropping up on your Facebook feed – but actually making them has long been beyond the average person’s ability. Photonomie has helped to address this discrepancy.

On your iOS device, it’s already possible to, with the stock Camera app, make panoramas; however, as these are much more about looking left and right than up, down and diagonally, they are arguably not true 360-degree photos. Now, you can make exactly those with Photonomie – and the app includes tips, such as in this video, for making them effectively.

It’s worth spending some time soaking up the advice here before you start making the multitude of snaps that the app will stitch together into a 360-degree photo. It’s crucial, for example, to make sure that your device remains on a stationary pivot, whether due to your steady grasp or a physical stand, as you make the necessary tilts for capturing various angles.

Fail to heed this warning, and you could find your 360-degree images looking rather like photo-realistic patchwork, a somewhat comical result, as your snaps fail to align correctly. While we imagine that taking good 360-degree photos could be easier with specialist camera equipment, that can often be very costly. Meanwhile, Photonomie, despite its limitations, is free to download.
