The romantic period drama Poldark was well-received when it aired as part of the PBS series Masterpiece last year. Thankfully, many of the great elements of the first season – including an easy-to-root-for lead and beautiful rural scenery, have remained for the upcoming second season’s opening.
On US shores, that season will debut on Sunday, September 25, at 8/7c, before follow-up episodes on each Sunday thereafter, at 9/8c, until November 27 – and, yes, again on Masterpiece. Having watched the first episode, we can reveal that it picks up very much where the previous season left off, with former American Revolutionary soldier Ross Poldark gravely accused and preparing to face trial.
The ladies will be pleased to know that, yes, heartthrob Aidan Turner, who plays Poldark, isn’t shy about occasionally baring his chiseled physique. However, there’s certainly a dark and somber tone to this opening episode, as Poldark’s arch rival George Warleggan, played by Jack Farthing, conspires to prejudice the court in favor of convicting Poldark for the crimes of wrecking and inciting a riot.
Especially welcome appearances among the cast include those of Eleanor Tomlinson as Poldark’s wife Demelza and John Nettles as Ray Penvenen, one of Cornwall’s wealthiest and most powerful gentlemen. We would say more, but we’ll simply leave you to discover the new season’s other charms for yourself.
